It’s that time of year again, when Hollywood rolls out their best popcorn movies. This year it started with Robocop and Captain America: The Winter Soldier a few weeks back. The next few years’ comic book movies seem to be the future, so let’s take a look at a few movies releasing in May.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2)
Early buzz on this one is looking about the same as the first installment. Rotten Tomato has it Certified Fresh. I’m riding the fence on this one. The Amazing Spider-Man was good, but it broke my number one pet peeve with superhero movies—removal of the mask.
Godzilla (May 6)
Hell yes!! It’s finally here and the trailers look fantastic. It amazes me that Godzilla has had ONLY one major US release. That seems wrong on SO many levels. No early reviews are available.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 23)
A lot of people were pleasantly surprised with X-Men: First Class. The buzz around Days of Future Past has been very positive. I think the biggest thing for me will be Wolverine. The trailers show him having a major impact on the story. More than he did in the comic.
Also this week is Blended by Sandler and Barrymore.
A Million Ways to Die in the West (May 30)
Okay, okay, this one isn’t a “popcorn” movie and will doubtfully make a profit at the theaters. But come on! It’s Seth MacFarlane—the guy that created Family Guy and Ted! The trailers look hilarious.
Also this week is Maleficent. I know Disney doesn’t really do R-rated movies but this one would have been amazing as an R feature. Shame.
