This week I want to try something a little different and want to talk about a bunch of stuff. I want to talk about my new favorite comic book, Beyond Belief, DC’s Convergence event and Netflix’s Daredevil show. Let’s do it to it.
So first of all I want to talk about a new book from Image, which I have been so excited to read. Its The Thrilling Adventure Hour Presents Beyond Belief #1, “The Donna Party”, by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker with art by Phil Hester. This book was as amazing as I thought it would be. It reads better then the podcast plays and captures the little things about Beyond Belief I always saw in my head while listening. The characters feel like Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster and the artwork is bang on, reminding me of old Shadow and Green Hornet style comics. I loved the panel that showed them finding a bottle of wine in a haunted Spanish castle, Indiana Jones style with rubble and adventure all around them. It feels like an old pulp comic in the best possible ways. 6/5, MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLY GOOD!!
Now we are going to keep it in comics and talk about something that is not so good… The Convergence Event going on in DC. I hate this. I think the event is strange and unnecessary and is complicating an already brokenly complicated timeline. I have read pretty much all of the Convergence books already and while a few stand out, Nightwing and Oracle, The Question and Speed Force, the vast majority of it is weird and poorly written. The characters that are being tapped are all loved because of their voices at the time they were written. Trying to get people who are used to writing your usual New 52 stuff to write in these voices isn’t going to work and DC trying to make it work is a little sad. Maybe this will lead to something better when the dust clears… let us all hope.
Now onto to TV, if you are not watching Daredevil on Netflix you are really missing out. This is quite possibly the best series on TV let alone Marvel series. Charlie Cox is rocking Matt Murdoch, Debra Ann Woll is also amazing as Claire, Elden Henson is amazing as Foggy but the stand out performance is by far Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. D’Onofrio is playing Fisk perfectly, he absolutely has nailed down the best thing about this character, and that is Fisk’s appearance vs. his lethality. This show makes Fisk look awkward and vulnerable as we see him on dates etc. but then we see him at work and see a glimpse of how dangerous and physical he can be, much like his comic book counterpart, a man to be feared by those with and without super powers. Charlie Cox continues to blow me away as the rough and brutal Daredevil, especially after I realized he plays Tristan in Stardust, a sweet unassuming young man. In Daredevil he plays Matt Murdoch with a bit of arrogance mixed into his strong love of what is right and just, he is a perfect fit for this role. The tone of this serious is perfect and I seriously have no complaints here. This is a great show even if you don’t like super hero shows.
While we are on the subject I want to say one thing. There are too many comic book based TV shows coming out. This is not necessarily a bad thing but the market is being flooded and soon it will be hard to pick out the good from the bad and the bottom will fall out before some amazing shows make it. Also I feel the wrong networks are pushing these shows, the 22 episode season is not going to work for these shows and adding more, like the unneeded SHIELD spin off and Legends or whatever the CW’s DC team up show is called, is going to kill stuff like AMC’s Preacher or the possibility of awesome stuff like whichever network has the rights to Outcast, Scalped and the rumored Titans. I am looking forward to seeing a bunch of new shows coming out though, like the one’s I already mentioned, but I just don’t want what happened to Young Justice or what I fear is going to happen to Constantine, to happen to other shows. Being cancelled to early sucks for the show and for the fans alike, BRING BACK YOUNG JUSTICE!!
