|Some tales are worth waiting to tell. Kros: Hallowed Ground is a 128-page graphic novel ten years in the making, created by industry veterans Tom Mandrake and John Ostrander.
The duo has turned to Kickstarter to publish the story of Kros, a vampire hunter by night and Civil War soldier by day.
In my experience, there are two types of Kickstarters: people short on cash and people looking for independence. Ostrander and Mandrake are very much the latter, having produced critically acclaimed comics since the 90s. These two are not turning to crowdfunding because they have no other options; for them it is about guaranteeing their justly earned creative control.
These guys mean business and, more importantly, they know the business. Their work on titles such as Martian Manhunter, GrimJack, and The Spectre speak more toward that point than I ever could.
|Envisioned as a supernatural narrative set during the Battle of Gettysburg, Kros: Hallowed Ground explores a simple yet poignant theme: “All wars are horror stories.”
Pledges of $35 or more will land you a print copy of the book, though donations as low as $15 provide a digital copy. Head to their Kickstarter page to see the entire range of pledging options. There’s just over a week left to go!
I grabbed a “Sawbones” copy for myself, which generously includes a set of signed mini prints as well as postcards and a digital copy of the book.
