Don’t jump to conclusions! This prompt has nothing to do with Christmas. You know, Santa hasn’t cornered the market on behavior. This time, the idea of naughty or nice applies to taboos. When we think of words, actions, or routine practices that are considered taboo, most automatically assume they are prohibited because there’s some element of evil in them. To take this one step further, it is also generally believed that violation of a taboo carries along with it the baggage of retribution of a supernatural nature.
Well, think again. One definition is ‘a taboo is an activity that is forbidden or sacred based on religious beliefs or morals’. What that tells us is ‘taboo’ can also be interpreted as an activity or perhaps even a ritual that is routinely practiced for the general good, depending on the particular culture. Some examples of ‘nice’ taboos are dancing with the dead and fire walking. One that could probably go either way is voodoo. The point being, what may be strictly forbidden in one setting is looked upon as a sacred rite in another. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, yeah?
Take a look around and scope out taboos in our society and in others as well. Choose one to explore that is a ‘yes-please-do’ or a ‘you-better-not-do’ and run with it.
