Over the years, we’ve seen all kinds of teen superhero groups form up, fight a really big monster/baddie, and decide to work together on a long-term basis. You know the drill. So when I heard Damian Wayne was going to lead the Teen Titans, I figured Tim would leave and Damian would somehow weasel himself into the leadership. I probably should have predicted what would happen but I have to say that I didn’t see this one coming. Not that I was really that surprised when it did.
Teen Titans: Rebirth, from Ben Percy and Jonboy Meyers, has the Titans pull a move I call “the Boy Band” and reunite two weeks after splitting up. After Tim Drake’s supposed-death in Detective Comics, Damian decides it’s up to him to reform the group. He recruits Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy and Kid Flash (the young Wally West) by drugging, tazing and kidnapping them.
This issue was mostly filler, going over what the characters have been up to since last we saw them. Beast Boy has gone to Hollywood and is living the party life, Starfire is hunting human traffickers in the Caribbean, Raven’s visiting a museum (I’m sure the Raven mini-series has more details on all that), and Kid Flash is just hanging out in Central City. What makes this issue fun is honestly the way Damian sneaks up on them and takes them out. Mostly because he makes comments that are just so Damian that I had to laugh out loud.
Despite not being terribly impressed by this issue, I have to say that I am looking forward to the next one. I’m a huge fan of Damian, and after barely seeing him in the current Bat-books, I’m excited to see him take on a more central role in this one. When I met Jonboy Meyers at SDCC, it sounded like this new creative team has a lot of really excellent ideas for this series, and I think we’re all basically going to love it. The art, of course, is stellar, and the writing is smooth and has snappy punchlines, perfect for a group of teenage superheroes.
And now that DC’s introduced a new Superboy (Jonathan White) and we have other teen heroes running around who are currently un- or underused (like Shazam, Static, Power Girl, Wonder Girl, etc.) maybe we’ll have some guest appearances in upcoming issues. Anything could happen with a team like Percy and Meyers, and I for one am looking forward to it.
